As a citizen,

I am deeply concerned about the state of the world’s remaining ancient forests, particularly unique and threatened ones such as the Boreal Forest. In Canada and many other countries, ancient forests – and the diversity of life they support – are being eradicated to produce paper and other goods for our use. Alongside their inherent value, these forests are essential to the stability of the Earth’s climate and freshwater systems.

By using Ancient Forest Friendly paper*, Canadian literary publishers are demonstrating that it is possible to publish attractive, informative and economical works without destroying our precious ancient forests. The transition to using eco-friendly paper needs to happen now throughout educational publishing and within educational institutions themselves, from preschool to university. I actively support and add my voice to preserving the world’s ancient and endangered forests.

* An Ancient Forest Friendly paper is a paper in which all the fibre possesses eco-friendly attributes; its post-consumer recycled content must be maximized; all virgin fibre must be Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified (no controlled wood content); all other sources of fibre must be recycled or from agricultural residue; and it must be treated without elemental chlorine - instead give preference to paper that is processed or totally chlorine free (PCF or TCF).

As a signatory, I pledge to:

• Discuss the issue with teachers and school administrators and ask them to work with educational publishers and photocopy centres to ensure that textbooks and educational supplies are printed on Ancient Forest Friendly paper;
• Ask my teachers to give preference to works printed by publishers who have formally committed to eliminate their use of paper from ancient and endangered forests as they become available;
• Accept the potential of minimal differences in paper whiteness and slight price increases in the short term, until ecological options are available and the market for environmental paper develops;
• Encourage other students to ask for books, supplies and notes printed on Ancient Forest Friendly paper;
• Encourage school administrators to sign onto the Raise Your Hand for the Forest initiative by committing to a formal paper procurement policy giving preference to books and paper that feature recycled content and FSC-certified fibre for their schools.

• Give preference to works printed by publishers who have formally committed to eliminate their use of paper from ancient and endangered forests as they become available, so long as the quality of their titles meets my curriculum needs;
• Accept the potential of minimal differences in paper whiteness and slight price increases in the short term, until the market develops;
• Encourage decision makers within relevant school administration and government institutions to work with educational publishers and copy centres in order to support the use of papers that do not come from ancient and endangered forests and to adopt standards to favour recycled content and FSC-certified fibre in purchasing decisions;
• Encourage my colleagues to ask for titles printed on Ancient Forest Friendly paper from educational publishers, and print and copy centres;
• Encourage school administrators to sign onto the Raise Your Hand for the Forest initiative by committing to a formal paper procurement policy giving preference to books and paper that feature recycled content and FSC-certified fibre for their schools.
